From Bad to Better: U.S. Cancer Rates Continue to Drop PDF Print E-mail

Cancer death rates for men and women in the U.S. kept dropping through 2008, continuing a nearly 20-year-long trend.

Comment: Despite the claims that cancer deaths are decreasing, cancer still remains the second leading cause of death in the US and most of the developed nations. The success of the campaign for smoking cessation and discontinuation of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has certainly contributed to the specific decline of lung and breast cancers. Nevertheless, there are many other cancers on the rise.

Approximately 12 million people worldwide get cancer every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report, worldwide 7.5 million people die because of cancer. It is estimated that by 2030, about 22 million people will be diagnosed with cancer annually. Moreover, the cost of cancer treatment is skyrocketing to the point that wealthy nations also confess that it is unsustainable for their governments. According to the 2009 reports, the cost associated with new cancer cases was at least $286 billion. Adding the cost of lost productivity due to premature death and disability, the number rises to $895 billion.

Indeed, lifestyle changes are crucial to reduce the rates of cancer and heart disease. So the focus is on prevention. However, this will be almost impossible if the pharmaceutical companies continue to regulate the healthcare system- a healthier community is a prohibitive concept with this business model. Currently, even the preventative strategies are governed according to the benefits of certain special interest groups. For example, cancer vaccines developed by pharmaceutical companies. Similarly, offering radiological screening procedures is a lucrative business for medical offices without radiological expertise. Currently there is a debate about any perceived benefits of the radiological screening methods are worth the potential risks associated with those. In the meantime, general population continue to be exposed to regular -and hazardous- doses of radiation to find the smallest of abnormalities which eventually may or may not be dangerous. Such over diagnosis leads to further tests and treatments along with increased psychological distress.

With the FDA approval of cervical and prostate cancer vaccines, the cancer vaccine is becoming a new industry. It is predicted that the market will become a $7 billion ‘cancer vaccine industry’ by 2015 -- a much needed boost to many leading pharmaceutical companies that are losing patent protection on their blockbuster drugs. Currently, companies are competing to develop and market vaccines for the most common cancers: lung, breast, colon cancer, and melanoma). However, the available vaccines, such as the prostate cancer vaccine come with a price tag of $93,000 for three treatments, and the melanoma vaccine is $120,000 for four treatments. The manufacturers try to justify the cost because these vaccines block the spread or recurrence of cancer, at least for a while! Cancer vaccines trigger the body’s own immune response activation - hopefully against cancer cells. Yet, there is always a possibility that the immune response will target the body’s normal functions resulting in a number of autoimmune diseases.

While it is encouraging that the cancer rates are dropping, the strategies suggested to reduce it further seem unconvincing. Although screening and early detection of cancer is important, excessive screening only leads to over-diagnosis and sometimes unnecessary treatments. Similarly, in addition to being prohibitively expensive, cancer vaccines have additional side effects.

Over a decade ago, Dr. Rath proved that chronic deficiency of essential nutrients promotes disease developments including heart disease and cancers, and supplementation of specific nutrients in synergistic proportions is critical for health. Scientists at Dr. Rath's Research Institute have studied synergistic micronutrient combination in more than fifty different types of cancer. According to our results, a specific combination of nutrients including vitamin C, the amino acids lysine and proline, green tea extract and other supporting nutrients can selectively kill the cancer cells, prevent the degradation of collagen tissue and strengthen it to stop the spread of cancer. The nutrient synergy is also shown to reduce blood vessel development (angiogenesis) towards to the tumor and improve the body’s immune response- something that the cancer vaccine would target. Many of these studies are published in major scientific publications and conferences.

Dr. Rath along with Dr. Aleksandra Niedzwiecki compiled these research findings in their recently published books, “Victory Over Cancer! Part 1" and "Victory Over Cancer Part 2.” These books outline the decade long cancer research conducted by the scientists at the Dr. Rath Research Institute and the simple, proven, safe, effective and affordable solutions to the economically challenging problem of cancer.
