Fever is common, but fever is complicated. It brings up science and emotion, comfort and calculation. {Comments: In this recent New York Times article a practicing pediatrician is expressing her doubts about aggressive fever reduction methods employed by physicians everywhere. Referring to one of the studies in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), Dr. Klass points out that there are multiple discrepancies in labeling and dosing instructions on children’s medications including anti-fever drugs. Eager to reduce the fever, parents tend to give wrong doses to their children. Fever, is beneficial to some extent to fight the infection and parents’ “Fever-phobia” is also compounded by the uninformed health care personnel. Another doctor interviewed said, “doctors are also part of the problem. Doctors and nurses weren’t taught about fever and all the wondrous things fever does in the animal kingdom.” In addition, the anti-fever medications are known to cause serious liver damage. However this fact is not emphasized and very rarely parents are aware of the extent of damage caused by these apparently harmless medications. Dr. Rath’s research team has studied the effects of nutrients that may alleviate the damage caused by acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol). The research publication can be viewed at www.drrathresearch.org.
